During this time of pandemic crisis, it is difficult to balance the safety of your staff while still providing quality health services to your patients. While we are facing the situation here in the US, several policy changes have been put in place to help the medical community, with some extensive “flexibilities” based on the emergency declaration by the President. These changes have allowed the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to expand access to Medicare telehealth services. This will allow beneficiaries to receive wider telehealth services without having to leave their homes to visit a healthcare center or physician’s office. While these measures are considered temporary, the overall goal is to ensure individuals, particularly those that are high-risk, are made aware of these benefits that can keep them healthy and work towards preventing the spread of the COVID-19.
With the expanded coverage under the 1135 waiver, medical practices can utilize telehealth technology at a higher level, ensuring both their patients and staff maintain the safety and distancing guidelines required to prevent the spread of the virus. Medicare can pay for office visits, telehealth visits, virtual check-ins and e-visits. Each of these types of “visits” have specific criteria and guidelines to follow, and are available in this fact sheet published by CMS earlier this month.
